Healthy Hydration

March 13, 2015

One of the things I believe in the most in when it comes to nutrition is the importance of staying adequately hydrated. Drinking enough water is one of the most important things you can do for yourself AND it has 0 calories, is cheap and is easy to store and carry with you. If don't drink enough water, starting to do so will improve your health dramatically and you will actually feel and see many of the benefits, as long as you keep with it every day.One of the things I believe in the most in when it comes to nutrition is the importance of staying adequately hydrated. Health Benefits of Staying Hydrated:

Helps flush out wastes

Suppresses your appetite so you don't overeat

Prevents fatigue and illness by keeping your body functioning at its best

Helps your body digest food better

Prevents constipation

Carries nutrients and oxygen to cells

Regulates body temperature

How much water should you drink?

Experts recommend you drink half of your body weight in oz of water each day (i.e. if you weigh 100 pounds, you should be drinking at least 50 oz/day). Now, how are you suppose to get in all that water every day?? If you aren't used to drinking much water, work up to this amount. Try cutting out part of the other drinks you normally have and replacing them with water. And if water isn't your thing, try adding cucumbers or some of your favorite fruits to give it some flavor. Another great way to help you get all your water in is to carry water with you throughout the day. If you're not used to drinking much water, you might want to use a marked bottle that breaks the water down into time increments to help you drink it consistently throughout the day (that way you're not trying to chug a few cups at bedtime). You can purchase a water bottle like the one below at www.motivationalbottle.com or use a permanent marker to make your own!

A couple of other tips that I find really helpful are: hydrate right from the start by drinking a glass of water as soon as you get up in the morning and drinking a glass of water before meals (before you get full). Start small and work up to your goal. Pretty soon you'll be craving water and your body will be thanking you!
